No Homo?

“Hey bro, can I hold your hand?… No homo…”

Whenever I have found myself in a situation where a straight man has had to use the ever popular phrase “no homo” it has me made me more curious about their sexual orientation. For anyone to over clarify such a declarative statement warrants curiosity. Typically when one says “no homo” it’s out of fear that their words or actions appear homosexual. But the fear that is incited that causes them to say “no homo” is a fear based in homosexuality itself, which makes the statement homophobic in nature. The phrase was popularized by 90’s rapper Cam’ron in 2006, and has since become popular among many rappers. This meme in particular, as one can assume, has come under fire by many. Doctor Marc Lamont Hill actually came out against the phrase stating, “in order to punctuate even the most sexually non-suggestive sentences with a homophobic disclaimer, one has to constantly be thinking about homosexuality”. What I find most interesting about this argument is that for “straight” men to be thinking constantly about homosexuality during interactions. This absolutely makes their sexuality questionable. Luckily this homophobic meme peaked in October 2009, and May 2011, but has since declined in google searches. Ultimately, in order for society to accept homosexuality, such phrases like “No Homo,” which attempt to divide homosexuals from heterosexuals, need to be put to rest.
